Former Southern Mississippi wide receiver Sherrod Gideon was among a numbers of players left without a place to play as NFL teams reduced rosters to the mandated limit of 65 on Tuesday.
Gideon, a Greenwood native, is the all-time leading receiver at Southern Mississippi. He was the third player taken in the sixth round this year by the New Orleans Saints.
Gideon, who saw his draf stock fall because of a nagging ankle injury, played in just one of the Saints' first three preseason games and didn't catch a pass.
As a senior at USM, Gideon, a Greenwood High School product, was hampered by an ankle injury. He played in eight games, making 40 catches for 520 yards and seven touchdowns.
In 1998, Gideon set single-season records for receptions (66), yards (1,186) and touchdowns (13). He also owns Southern Miss career records in all three categories.
