The Greenwood public schools will host "A Christmas Musical," their first district-wide event to honor parents Tuesday at the Leflore County Civic Center.
Individual schools still honor parents, but this is the first time they will be honored collectively, said Margaret Dean, public relations coordinator for the school district.
"We want to show our appreciation to our parents for working with their children and school personnel," Dean said.
"Without their encouragement and support, we would not be able to be a successful school district."
At the event, each school will present a musical performance.
Bankston Elementary School's show choir, "Pizzazz," will perform several Christmas tunes.
Show choir director Patti Corley said she sees the musical as schools "coming together to celebrate the season and celebrate education."
"We are going to be doing 'Merry Christmas to Me' and an interpretative drama to 'Still Mary's Little Child,'" she said. A parent will sing the song while the choir interprets.
Kindergartners from Davis Elementary School will sing an African-American spiritual titled "What You Gonna Call Your Pretty Little Baby." Davis first- and second-graders will also perform.
The W.C. Williams Elementary School's Girl Scout troop will sing and the school's step team will perform.
"We really are excited about it," said W.C. Williams Principal Elnora Brown. "We believe it's going to turn out to be good for parents, students, staff and administrators and for the school district as a whole."
"It's another chance to try to connect the family and the school together," Brown said.
Threadgill Elementary School's Parent/Senior Citizen Volunteer Choir will offer Christmas selections, and pre-kindergartners will present a nativity scene.
The Greenwood middle and high school choirs will combine for selections, and the GHS band will also provide holiday music.
Door prizes and other gifts will be awarded.
The musical begins at 6:30 p.m. Parents may contact their child's school for more information.
