Angela Curry is a Woman of Achievement.
The Greenwood Business and Professional Women's club bestowed the honor on Curry, assistant director of the Greenwood Industrial Board and Economic Development Foundation.
Curry was surprised by the announcement Thursday evening at the BPW banquet at the Greenwood Country Club.
Curry is the first African-American woman to receive the honor in Greenwood.
She is the daughter of Gloria and Roger Rudell of Dallas and the granddaughter of the late Elnora and Roy Curry Sr. She has three siblings. All of them live in Houston.
Curry graduated with honors in 1987 from J.Z. George High School. "She loved playing basketball for J.Z. George Jaguars basketball team," said Becky Avant, who made the announcement at the end of the banquet dinner.
Curry recently graduated from Mississippi Valley State University with a degree in business administration. She is secretary of the United Way, a member of the Greenwood Leflore Hospital Foundation Board, a member of the Greenwood Leflore County Foundation and serves on the board of the Greenwood Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Curry is treasurer of Mitchell Springs Missionary Baptist Church. "She has a quiet, sweet and giving spirit," Verhage said.
Last year's Woman of Achievement was May Whittington. The state representative died in July.
