One of the world's largest barbecue grills will serve sausage, barbecue and beans for a Bankston Elementary School benefit on Wednesday from 2-7 p.m. at Market Place on Park Avenue.
Bankston's music program will receive 100 percent of the proceeds.
Music director Patti Corley is excited that the money will benefit all the students at the school. They plan to use the funds for new sound equipment.
"We are very fortunate that we are able to teach all the performing arts at Bankston," she said. "Every child is on the stage during the school year in some kind of performance."
Wisconsin-based Johnsonville Foods is the owner of the big grill which travels the nation donating barbecue and sausage to customers' charities. Its events serve as free advertising for them.
"It makes everybody look good," Corley said.
The company called Market Place manager Derrick Simpson and asked him if he had a charity he would like to support.
Market Place chose Bankston because of the Adopt-A-School program.
"We donate to all Greenwood schools from time to time," Simpson said. "This year we've showed more focus with Bankston because we adopted them this year with the Adopt-A-School program. Bankston's right in our backyard."
"We're going to try to get all the kids out to see it on Wednesday," said Corley. They had hoped to have it at Bankston, but the truck was too big, she said.
Sausage and barbecue sandwiches will be $2 and plate dinners, including barbecue or sausage, beans and bread, will be $5.
The school's parent-teacher organization will help serve and work at the grill, Corley said.
