Residents asked to help speed collection of storm debris

The city of Greenwood is asking residents to help speed the process of debris collection from the Jan. 24-25 ice storm.
Residents are asked to not mix household trash, furniture or construction material with limb and debris piles, as it slows or prevents contracted crews from being able to pick it up.

Carroll shuts down Kirk

Carroll Academy’s baseball team claimed a 10-0 six-inning win over visiting Kirk Academy Friday night in Carrollton.
The Rebels plated one run each in the second and fourth innings and four runs each in the third and sixth. They outhit Kirk 11-1 and took advantage of three Kirk errors and nine walks issued by the Raiders.

Prep track: Pillow squads compete at Prep

Pillow Academy’s girls and boys varsity and junior high track teams competed in the Jackson Prep Invitational Wednesday in Flowood.
The varsity girls had 11 total points, and the varsity boys had just three points. The junior high girls had seven points, and the junior high boys had 32 points.

Herman Jesse Brown Jr.

Services for Herman Jesse Brown Jr. of Greenwood will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Century Funeral Home.

Mr. Brown, 74, died Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at Merit Health Hospital in Jackson.

He was a retired welder and a U.S. Army veteran.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Pillow netters earn team win over Bayou

Pillow Academy’s tennis team closed out the regular season with a 5-4 win over visiting Bayou Academy Tuesday at Twin Rivers.

The Mustangs got four wins in girls singles and doubles and one win in boys singles to knock off Bayou.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
