Longtime tax assessor will step down

After 26 years as Leflore County’s tax assessor, Leroy Ware will be stepping down from the role soon.
On Monday, the Leflore County Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 to accept Ware’s letter of resignation. His last day on the job will be April 30.

About 175 expected to participate in Half Marathon, 10K, 5K

Well over 100 runners are registered to race down Greenwood’s streets early Saturday morning for the Viking Half Marathon, 10K and 5K.
The event, sponsored by Viking Range, is in its 15th year. Participants in the half marathon will start their trek at 7:30 a.m., and those in the 5K and 10K will begin at 8 a.m.

Pillow netters earn team win over Bayou

Pillow Academy’s tennis team closed out the regular season with a 5-4 win over visiting Bayou Academy Tuesday at Twin Rivers.

The Mustangs got four wins in girls singles and doubles and one win in boys singles to knock off Bayou.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
