Applications are now available for the new Greenwood Mayor’s Youth Council.
Students with an interest in participating have until Sept. 15 at 5 p.m. to submit their applications.
The council’s mission statement describes it as a group of young people developing leadership skills through volunteer service and increased communication to better their community.
The council will be involved in activities including monthly meetings, volunteer projects and a statewide summit. Mayor Carolyn McAdams has said opportunities may be available for members to attend meetings of the Mississippi Municipal League.
The youth council is open to students in grades 10, 11 and 12 at Greenwood High School, Amanda Elzy High School, Leflore Christian School, Delta Streets Academy and Pillow Academy.
Each applicant must have maintained at least a C average in all classes and have one letter of recommendation from a teacher, school administrator or community leader.
The application includes questions about why the student wants to be involved with the council, what goals and ideas the student has for the organization and what organizations or clubs he or she is actively involved in.
Students will be contacted by email once selections are made. Chief Administrative Officer
Cynthia Stanciel and City Attorney Don Brock serve as the council project coordinators.
