A Greenwood man will survive his injuries after suffering several gunshot wounds in an assault that authorities say was carried out by his brother.
Demarius Bush, 26, will make a full recovery, said Tracy Ware, the grandfather of Bush’s 2-year-old daughter.
“As of now, he’s doing OK,” Ware said Thursday. “We’ve all been praying for him.”
Demarius Bush was shot several times Tuesday night at a home that he shared with family members on Canary Cove. His cousin, 26-year-old Demontra Ewing, was also shot and died from his injuries.
The third resident of the house, 22-year-old Edward Bush Jr., is considered by authorities to be the suspect in the shooting. He is the brother of Demarius Bush and cousin of Demontra Ewing. The Leflore County Sheriff’s Department has issued a statewide warrant for Edward Bush’s arrest and considers him armed and dangerous.
Sheriff Ricky Banks said Thursday that the pursuit of Edward Bush is ongoing. He said he has received information about Bush possibly being in another state, but he declined to say which state that may be.
Banks said during the initial report of the shooting that Demarius Bush had been shot in the head, but Ware clarified that it was only a graze.
Ware said Demarius Bush’s most serious injuries were to his lungs, which had collapsed. Demarius Bush was on a breathing machine and sedated at the University of Mississippi Medical Center Thursday but was “very responsive,” Ware said.
Banks had said he was doubtful Demarius Bush would survive his injuries. Ware said that statement was “insensitive to the family” and “very inappropriate.”
Ware also criticized the statements made about marijuana being found at the scene. Banks had said he did not know whether it played a role in the shooting.
“We don’t want to paint a bad picture that this was a drug scene because these were not those type of people,” Ware said. “It was just a situation that had gone bad for who knows why.”
He said Demarius Bush is assistant principal, basketball coach and dean of students at Coffeeville High School.
Ware also fondly remembered Demontra Ewing, who he said was known to family and friends by the nickname “Twonk.”
Ewing was a graduate of Mississippi Valley State University and a supervisor at Milwaukee Tool.
“He was really an outstanding person with a very loving attitude who went to work, came home, cared for his family and unfortunately, this is what happened,” Ware said.
Ware said that the shooting was “a true shock” and the family has no idea what led to it.
