A group of volunteers handed out more than 350 plates of free food Friday at The Venue by the Trail restaurant in Greenwood in response to last weekend’s winter storm. Volunteers came from groups such as Delta Sigma Theta sorority, the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity and The Links Inc., a community organization, among others. Second area code added for north Mississippi

A second telephone area code has been implemented for the northern half of Mississippi, including the Greenwood area.
The new area code 471 was overlaid with the current 662 number on Friday, increasing the amount of available phone numbers without forcing residents to change their current numbers.

Leflore County unemployment rate drops to 5.1% in December

Leflore County’s unemployment rate improved to 5.1% last month, according to figures released Tuesday by the Mississippi Department of Employment Security.
The unemployment rate typically rises in December as schools are closed for the holidays and more people enter the workforce.

Couple grateful for support after losing home

Sometime last year, I was chatting with a friend about a treasured book I have owned since I was 10.
“Here is the bad news. My copy of D’Aulaires’ Greek myths is a first edition,” I said, and I mentioned that I had checked its monetary value online.
“And here is the good news. It’s not worth much,” I said.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
