Greenwood’s annual Juneteenth celebration lit up Front Street and the Yazoo River Saturday evening with a fireworks display, music and camaraderie. The event, established in 2021, refers to June 19, 1865. This is when a Union general in Galveston, Texas, announced that enslaved persons had been freed due to the Emancipation Proclamation and the end of the Civil War. Among the celebrants enjoying funnel cakes Saturday are, from the left, Niasa Harrington of Indianola, Karrington Stockstill of Itta Bena and Sha’Rayia Stewart of Indianola. Greenwood’s event is organized annually by Jordan Freeman, Kamron Daniels and Kenneth Milton Jr., also known as Thee G.O.O.D. Fellas. (By Jordan Freeman, Copyright 2025 Emmerich Newspapers, Inc.)
