District cancels all tailgating events at schools

The Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District announced on its Facebook Monday evening that the district will cancel all tailgating events at all schools for the remainder of the 2025-2026 school year. This decision was based on a newly released recommendation from the Mississippi High School Activities Association.

Juvenile site in ‘substantial compliance’

After 10 years of federal oversight, the Leflore County Juvenile Detention Center has achieved “substantial compliance” under its court-ordered settlement agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice, having been found to engage in better practices that no longer violate the constitutional rights of the children detained there.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
