Henry Fant led in a too-close-to-call runoff election Tuesday against incumbent Samantha Milton for the District 3 seat on the Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School Board.
Fant, a retired coach and educator, received 221 of the 428 votes cast, and Milton collected the other 207.
Leflore County Circuit Clerk Elmus Stockstill said there were still 19 absentee ballots to be considered that arrived on Tuesday, as well as any others that were postmarked by Tuesday and arrive by Dec. 6.
Based on the number of absentee ballots distributed by his office, Stockstill said on Tuesday night that at most there might be three or four absentee ballots still to come in. All of the remaining absentee ballots will be considered by a resolution board to determine whether they are counted.
Stockstill said final results will not be known until Dec. 7, since election officials are legally required to wait five days to count the absentee ballots received Tuesday and afterward.
The vote went to a runoff after neither candidate gained the required majority in the general election.
Fant said after Tuesday’s balloting, “We’re just going to sleep on it. Whatever’s going to happen is going to happen.”
