Snow, sleet in forecast for Monday

1 dies, 1 airlifted after shooting (UPDATED)

A 19-year-old man died Thursday in an exchange of gunfire that began at a highway intersection in Greenwood and continued into a neighboring McDonald’s restaurant.
Leflore County Coroner Debra Sanders said Shackia Stewart of Robinsonville died at Greenwood Leflore Hospital after being brought in after the shooting.

MLK prayer breakfast set Monday at Civic Center

For the first time in Greenwood, Martin Luther King Jr. Day will have a Monday program with a community prayer breakfast.
The event will begin at 9 a.m. Monday at the Leflore County Civic Center. Anyone who would like to attend is asked to donate $7.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
