Council, mayor to get raises

Hurt museum house burns

The home site of the Mississippi John Hurt Museum in Avalon, which honors a popular figure in Mississippi blues music history, burned down Wednesday morning.
“It’s sad to see it go up in flames,” curator Floyd Bailey said Wednesday. “That house has been here since John lived it in the 1920s.”

Market Place to honor public servants at Community Day

The gathering will start at 2 p.m. on Simpson Street behind the Park Avenue grocery store.

Police receive complaint about trespassing at law firm building

The owners of a Front Street building that houses a law firm have made a complaint to Greenwood police about two males trespassing on their property.
Greenwood Police Lt. Roland Galvan made contact with the owners of the Maxwell Law Firm building and was told that the unwanted activity had increased in the past week.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
