Eric Hopkins from Greenwood Utilities works Wednesday to disconnect a power line from a utility pole that snapped in two on the southern edge of Whittington Park during Tuesday’s storm. Assisting him is fellow lineman Jake Liddell. A row of five poles broke from the force of the winds, which reached more than 50 miles an hour in Greenwood, according to the National Weather Service. Winds knock down trees, poles

High winds came through Greenwood, Leflore County and Carroll County Monday night, doing some damage along the way.
Christopher Rainer, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Jackson, said the Delta was pummeled with winds in the 50 mph range.

Viking Half Marathon: 'Just a perfect race'

A clear morning, along with a cold wind, greeted runners at Saturday’s Viking Half Marathon, 10K & 5K runs through downtown Greenwood and its north neighborhoods.
The temperature at the 7:30 a.m. start was 50 degrees, but a brisk wind made it feel like 41.

Man’s murder charges dismissed

Mae Hampton wept silently in court Friday morning after the case was dismissed against Jammario Griggs, who was charged in a double homicide last year in Itta Bena that claimed the lives of her son and his friend.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
