In 1492, when Columbus sailed the ocean blue, he was lucky he didn’t know that the Greeks had accurately measured the Earth’s circumference almost 2,000 years earlier. Columbus believed the Earth was only about half as big as it really was and thought he could sail to India with the provisions he had.
