Irresponsibility breeds cruelty

When I lived in Arkansas, I once covered a city council meeting where the local animal shelter was the topic of discussion. The shelter was overcrowded and the city had little resources to properly take care of all the animals. I had paid a visit to the shelter to do a story for the newspaper and saw dogs eating another dead dog.

Best films don’t always win

I doubt I’ll watch the Oscars on Sunday night, but I will be interested in the outcome in several of the categories. I’ve always been a bit of an Oscar buff and usually try to see at least a few of the top-nominated films. In 2022, there were several good-to-great movies, some of which I’ve seen, some of which were nominated for Oscars.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
