To teachers and friends, he’s known as a pretty funny guy, but after lunch and after school at Delta Streets Academy, Christopher Byrdo adopts a more mature attitude as he performs his custodial duties.
Byrdo, 17, a junior at DSA, has been helping clean up there for about four months.

Delta Devils bested by Cowboys

The Diamond Devils’ trip to Lake Charles, Louisiana, didn’t fare well as Mississippi Valley’s baseball team dropped a 7-2 decision to McNeese State on Tuesday.
Valley (6-10) fell behind early after the Cowboys scored a run in the bottom of the second inning and plated two more in the third.

Valley primed for SWAC contests

Mississippi Valley’s Diamond Devils are nearing SWAC play as they take a 6-6 overall record into the weekend tournament against the University of New Orleans in New Orleans,
Valley played the Privateers (8-5) on Friday, and Saturday’s game starts at 2 p.m. Sunday’s game 3 has a 1 p.m. start. The games will be broadcast on ESPN+.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
