Devils field veteran baseball team under new coach

Devilettes grab road win over Alabama State

Mississippi Valley State’s women’s basketball team’s eight-game losing streak has been snapped.
Alabama State got a career-high 33 points from forward Cordasia Harris, but the Devilettes utilized a total team effort to clinch a 67-59 win over the Lady Hornets Monday in Montgomery, Alabama.

When the final whistle blew on Thursday, Serafin Simon III needed a moment.
Pillow Academy’s boys soccer team had just captured back-to-back MAIS Division II state championships with a 2-0 victory over Brookhaven Academy and was celebrating when Simon III laid down atop the turf of Jackson Prep’s field to soak it all in.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
