Veteran trio leads Pillow's girls soccer in hunt for 4th consecutive state title

The offseason practices for Pillow Academy’s girls soccer team have been full of competition and a level of excitement that only can be had when a team is seemingly in the middle of a dynastic run, coming off its third-straight state championship.

Kelly ‘happy’ to be in college football video game

Despite it being only 10 years ago, it seems like forever since Dante Kelly was an excited teenager, booting up his gaming system to play EA Sports College Football 14.
He already had a love for football and could picture himself as a college football player in the game.
“I always wanted to be in the game,” he said.

Valley's defense adds Mathews as safeties coach

Mississippi Valley State football has rounded out its defensive staff this week with the addition of new safeties coach Armunz Mathews.
Mathews, a 26-year-old Tallahassee, Florida, native, joins the program from the Colorado high school coaching ranks, leaving Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora to come to Itta Bena.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
