Devils take down Rattlers for 1st win of season

Mississippi Valley State quarterback Ty’Jarian Williams threw for 251 yards and two touchdowns, the Delta Devils’ defense recovered three fumbles — two inside Rattler territory — and Valley broke into the win column for the first time this season, holding on late to earn a 24-21 victory over Florida A&M on Saturday in Tallahassee, Florida.

Leflore stung by Union High 36-14, closes season at 7-5

Leflore County played with heart and grit against a bruising Union High School Friday night in Itta Bena in the second round of the MHSAA Class 2A playoffs, but the Yellowjackets’ physicality proved to be too much in a 36-14 season-ending defeat.
Leflore concludes its season at 7-5 overall.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
