Lunch luau greets new MDCC students

Hawaiian cuisine flavored the introduction for new students at a lunch luau hosted by Mississippi Delta Community College at its Greenwood campus.
Mary Johnson, a sophomore culinary student, said she came to the community college for Monday’s welcome week event just to help out.
“This is what I love,” she said.

Promise Community has big plans for Greenwood Leflore schools

Summer programs served as the kickoff for the Leflore Promise Community, which is starting to work within the Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District.
The Delta Health Alliance previously has established two other Promise Communities in the Delta, one in Sunflower County and one in Washington County.

Food giveaway: Boxes distributed at Community Center

Those in need are again able to receive food packages from the Greenwood Community Center.
Residents drove through the center’s parking lot on Avenue I Friday morning to receive food for the first time since May, when the center halted the program to focus on its summer activities.

Valley receives study-abroad grant

Mississippi Valley State University has received a $35,000 grant from the U.S. Department of State to help create interest in and foster study-abroad opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
