Itta Bena youth event set May 28; location to be determined

The Itta Bena Race will be held May 28, but the location of the event for the city’s youth is still up in the air.
After hearing from organizer Keidra Smith Ross, the Board of Aldermen voted Tuesday to approve the date but not Ross’ suggested location of the park on Dorothy Street.

Mothers of slain sons to share stories Friday

Friday will mark a time of reflection and action as Mothers of Murdered Sons will hold a gathering at the Greenwood Community Center.
The nonprofit organization, founded by Jessica Frazier and her daughter, Tiffany, will host the event at the center on Avenue I beginning at 6 p.m. Friday.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
