Community Development director will push efforts to clean up city

Marvin Russell has spent most of his professional life learning everything he can about housing and construction.
He plans to put that experience to good use as Greenwood’s Community Development director.
“We want something that people will be able to say, ‘Hey, Greenwood is a good place.’ That is my goal,” Russell said.

Council OKs contract for Carl Center manager

The Greenwood City Council has approved a contract to bring Karyn Burrus back to manage The Carl Center, but Mayor Kenderick Cox says he does not support the move.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
