City Council OKs budget, tax increase

The Greenwood City Council on Wednesday approved the budget for the city’s upcoming fiscal year, which includes a property tax increase of about 3.7%.
All five members who were present voted yes. Ward 1’s Johnny Jennings and Ward 4’s Charles McCoy were absent.

Emmett Till statue is nearly complete

A statue to commemorate an icon of the civil rights movement is nearly complete.
Leflore County District 2 Supervisor Reginald Moore said Wednesday that the statue of Emmett Till is on track to be delivered to Leflore County in mid- to late October.
The statue will be installed at Rail Spike Park.

Atmos rebate to boost utility

Greenwood Utilities is working to ensure access to water is maintained even when the power goes out.
The utility company has received a $25,000 rebate from Atmos Energy as part of the provider’s Backup Generator Rebate Program.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
