Syphilis is a serious and deadly problem for Mississippi mothers and infants, with a 1,100% increase in newborns being diagnosed with the infection from 2019 to 2020, the state health officer said Wednesday.
“It’s killing our babies,” said Dr. Daniel Edney, who took over the post in August.
