Mayor to propose state of emergency

Greenwood Mayor Kenderick Cox is asking his police officers to take the streets back.
To aid them, Cox plans to propose a state of emergency for the city and partner with Leflore County leadership to develop plans to address gun violence.

Defendants in suit over cyclist’s death deny negligence

Defendants in a lawsuit over the death of an Alabama woman during the 2023 Bikes, Blues & Bayous ride are denying claims of negligence made by her husband.
However, six months after the suit’s filing, there is no scheduled trial date.
The lawsuit is one side of a legal argument.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
