Speakers discuss impact of St. Jude hospital’s work

Taylor Calhoun knows the impact that St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has had on Greenwood.
His son, Miller, was diagnosed with leukemia in December 2014. For the next three years, the Calhoun family was on a journey to defeat the disease with the help of St. Jude.

MDCC president discusses plans for new Greenwood site

Mississippi Delta Community College President Dr. Steven Jones has big plans for the new Greenwood campus.
The college announced in August that it had purchased the former Malouf Furniture and Interiors building on U.S. 82. Jones said MDCC is planning to move into the 44,000-square-foot building by July 2026.

JSU dominates MVSU on senior day

Mississippi Valley State was looking to give head coach Terrell Buckley his first win in SWAC play on senior day at Rice-Totten Stadium Saturday. The problem was they faced divison-leader Jackson State.

The Tigers (7-2, 4-1) turned in a dominating effort to defeat the Delta Devils (1-8, 0-5) 42-3.

Simon chosen as interim police chief

The Greenwood Police Department has a new head man.
During its rescheduled regular meeting Wednesday afternoon, the Greenwood City Council approved the appointment of Serafin Simon Jr. as the interim chief of police effective immediately.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
