One of the things that I have always followed is sports, specifically football. College football has always been a passion of mine. My preferred team, the Auburn Tigers, has been struggling as of late, but I still follow most of the SEC very closely. Greenwood assistant chief to retire Nov. 1

Clifton King, assistant chief of the Greenwood Police Department, will be retiring at the end of this month, Mayor Kenderick Cox announced Tuesday afternoon during the Greenwood City Council meeting.

Cox said the retirement will take effect on Nov. 1, and the announcement took the mayor by surprise.

Hosemann: Senate looking to crack down on truancy

Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann wants to see local school districts crack down on chronic absenteeism.
The state average is 24%, but Greenwood specifically has a chronic absenteeism rate of 40%. One of the ways the Mississippi Senate plans to address that is making sure school districts have truancy officers.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
