Top Mississippi lawmakers reach deal on income tax cut

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi House and Senate leaders reached a deal Saturday to reduce the state income tax over four years, saying it would be the largest tax cut in the state's history.

“We are positioning ourselves to be one of the most tax-friendly states in the country,” Republican House Speaker Philip Gunn said.

Mississippi increases budget estimates; tax cuts unresolved

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Top Mississippi lawmakers on Friday increased estimates of how much tax money the state will collect this budget year and next.

The current year's general fund estimate climbed from $5.8 billion to nearly $6.9 billion. The estimate for the year that begins July 1 climbed from $6.5 billion to nearly $7 billion.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
