Bryant says he'll sign lottery bill by mid-September deadline

JACKSON — Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant has a mid-September deadline to sign a bill creating a state lottery to help pay for roads and bridges, and he has promised to do so.

Bryant said getting a lottery up and running will take at least six months. Some lawmakers said it could take a year.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
