Pilot calls rescuers after plane crashes

JACKSON — Injured and disoriented, a pilot was trapped upside down in his crashed airplane for several hours Tuesday but was able to make calls on his cellphone while rescuers searched the north Mississippi woods where he went down, authorities said after finding the man alive.

Judge temporarily blocks Turner execution

JACKSON — A federal judge has temporarily blocked the execution of Mississippi death row inmate Hart Turner.

Turner of Greenwood was scheduled to die Wednesday for the deaths of two men killed during a Carroll County robbery spree in 1995.

U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves today halted the execution.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
