Townsend, Winona take down rival J.Z. George

J.Z. George looked like it had the scouting report on former star tailback Deriaun Townsend — until it mattered most.

Townsend, who transferred to rival Winona during the summer, stayed relatively silent before busting loose for a 28-yard touchdown run to seal a 41-20 victory over the Jaguars on Friday night at Farris Jenkins Field.

Pillow Academy ready for rivalry game against Washington

Pillow Academy’s five-game winning streak against rival Washington School will be put to the test in Friday’s District 1-5A opener.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Huddleston Field in Greenville.

“These kids have grown up together,” Washington coach Greg Wallace said. “We’ve had some battles with them in the past.”

The Mustangs ran the football down the throat of the Panthers’ defense, racking up 255 yards and five scores on the ground in a 35-6 blowout victory at Bill Davis Field.
