Greenwood Leflore Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2020 honored

Hundreds of athletes flocked to the Leflore County Civic Center on Friday night for the second annual Greenwood-Leflore Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony honoring the Class of 2020.
The Class of 2021 will be celebrated Saturday night starting at 7 p.m.

Stubbs introduced as Mississippi Valley State's new baseball coach

Stanley Stubbs found his first job back in 1994 as an assistant baseball coach at Jackson State.
More than two decades later, Stubbs is returning to the Southwestern Athletic Conference to take over a Mississippi Valley State program that he hopes is his final coaching destination.

North New Summit has new name, same goals

After a summer of uncertainty, the former North New Summit School will be back in session this fall under a new name, Leflore Christian School — a saving grace for parents struggling to find special education alternatives in the Greenwood area.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
