Leflore Co. native publishes memoir on plantation life

A Leflore County native who grew up on a plantation has recently published a memoir, “The Sunnyside Story,” reflecting on that experience.
“It was pretty rough. We grew up on the plantation under an awful boss. The plantation owner wasn’t always pleasant,” Ora Tanner-Martin said of her first published book.

A Mississippi historical marker commemorating the civil rights movement in Itta Bena was knocked off its post earlier this month. Shannon Bowden, a mass communications instructor at Mississippi Valley State University who worked on a project to help erect the marker, said she believes the marker was torn down in an act of vandalism.

Civil rights marker torn down

Five months after it was unveiled, a Mississippi historical marker commemorating the civil rights movement in Itta Bena has been knocked down from its post in what one proponent believes was an act of vandalism.
The marker was erected along the turnoff on Mississippi 7 South by Leflore County High School.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
