Attorney known for athletic talent, sense of humor

Tom Paul Calhoun III, a well-known Greenwood attorney who had a friendly demeanor and a penchant for sports, died Saturday. He was 73.
Born and raised in Greenwood, Mr. Calhoun graduated from Greenwood High School in 1966, where he was a stellar basketball player.

Judge orders special elections for Itta Bena mayoral, Ward 1 alderman seats

A state-appointed judge overseeing election contests for the offices of Itta Bena mayor and Ward 1 alderman has ordered that special elections be held for these seats.
Special Circuit Court Judge Jeff Weill Sr. signed off on the agreed orders Thursday, the same day each order was filed with the Leflore County Circuit Court.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
