Grant funds will help students through school

Mary McSwine: 1929-2022: Teacher, activist known for ‘kind and gentle spirit’

Lifelong Greenwood resident and longtime educator Mary McSwine, who was active in the civil rights movement in the 1960s, was a “kind and gentle spirit” who cared about people, says daughter Gwendolyn Scaife.
Mrs. McSwine, 92, died Jan. 4 of natural causes at a hospital in North Little Rock, Arkansas.

Mask mandate reinstated for county buildings

The Leflore County Board of Supervisors has unanimously reinstated a mask mandate at all county buildings in response to the spread of the omicron variant of COVID-19.
The mandate, which was approved by the board Monday and took effect that day, lasts for 30 days. After that, the board will decide whether to renew it.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
