Jolly old elf is busy

Santa Claus is coming to town — Thursday night, to be exact.

While preparing for his busiest night of the year, the jolly man dressed all in red visited the Cotesworth Culture & Heritage Center in Carroll County this past weekend, met with boys and girls and asked what they wanted for Christmas.

Christmas tradition

For more than 60 years, a large plastic Santa Claus figure has signaled the start of the holiday season for many in Greenwood.

“He’s just part of Christmas in Greenwood and has been for a long time for anybody who has lived here for any length of time,” said Carolyn Mitchell.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
