Friday signing significant for author of book on Till

The incident that led to the murder of Emmett Till occurred about 10 miles north of Turnrow Books.

So Devery Anderson, author of the latest book on the 1955 racially motivated slaying, said that his book signing and reception on Friday — the 60th anniversary of Till’s death — at the Greenwood bookstore will mean a lot to him.

Pet adoption event coming up Saturday

A supplies drive and pet adoption event for the Leflore County Humane Society will be held Saturday at Tractor Supply.

The event is being sponsored by the United Way of Leflore County as a part of its new Agency Highlight program. The United Way supports the animal shelter and nine other nonprofit organizations in Leflore County.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
