PA student is National Merit finalist

A Pillow Academy senior is being recognized as a top student in the nation.

Nada Aziz has advanced to become a finalist in the 62nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

“It’s an honor, and I’m super excited,” said Aziz.

The 18-year-old was named a semifinalist in September 2016.

Fundraiser to show love for library

The Friends of the Library will hold the inaugural “Love Your Library” fundraiser Saturday.

The event will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Greenwood-Leflore Public Library. Those buying tickets at $5 each can sample an array of desserts.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
