The Begin with Reading program needs readers who have time and a willing heart, says Jennifer Russell, Leflore County Mississippi State University Extension Service child and family development agent.

Tiny doors

A group of fairy gnomes is moving into downtown Greenwood, reads a note taped beside a tiny red door located outside against the brick corner of Mississippi Gift Co.

It was the first door to be spotted. Now, three other doors have popped up, bringing a little fairy magic to the downtown sidewalks.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
