Stylist loves making others look their best

Annette Smith has a passion for hair.

“I love to make people look good, and I love doing hair,” said Smith, who has been a hairdresser for 49 years.

Cutting and styling hair is a family business for Smith.

“My daddy was a barber for 51 years in Grenada in the same spot,” she said.

Ashley Griffin of Greenwood was selected to the Top 12 at the Miss Black USA pageant on Sunday and won the Community Service Ambassador scholarship award.

Greenwood’s Ashley Griffin made it to the Top 12 and was the winner of the Community Service Ambassador scholarship award at the 2018 Miss Black USA pageant.

“It’s an honor,” said Griffin. “For me to win that community service award on a national platform is pretty awesome.”

At the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., Yolande van Heerden, left, ran into fellow Greenwood resident Miss Black Mississippi USA Ashley Griffin. Van Heerden was vacationing there and visited the museum at the same time as the Miss Black USA contestants. “First thing after we did a full-on Mississippi hug, she said her mama was right. ‘Doesn't matter where you go, you'll run into someone you know,’” said van Heerden.

After a successful sock drive last year, Carver O’Neal is pictured with the 665 socks collected before he shipped them to Atlanta Mission, which is a homeless shelter. This year, the socks donated will be sent to Stewpot Community Services, a homeless ministry in Jackson.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
