Making a difference

A youth-led effort to help restock the Community Food Pantry will be held next Sunday.

Altrusa International of Greenwood Inc. and the Leflore County Mississippi State University Extension Service Office will hold a kickoff Monday for their annual Begin with Reading program. The event will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the Extension office. Annual library fundraiser set for Monday

The Friends of the Greenwood-Leflore Public Library will hold the third annual fish fry fundraiser on Monday.

Prepared by Larry’s Fish House, plates are $12 each and include four fillets, fries, coleslaw, hushpuppies and a bottle of water. Pickup will be held from 4 to 6:30 p.m. in the parking lot of Greenwood Market Place.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
