Air show ready for takeoff

3 facing drug, weapon charges

A routine traffic stop for seat-beat violations last Saturday night resulted in three Greenwood men being charged with drug, weapon and other offenses.

Police are also on the lookout for a fourth suspect who fled.

The State Games of Mississippi stopped to light its torch in Greenwood as part of its ceremonial journey across the state. Special Events Coordinator Janice Vannatta said organizers of the State Games decided to come to Greenwood as part of its 25th-year celebration because of the strong presence the city has at the games each year. Greenwood was the only Delta city that received a visit. State Games torch makes stop in city

Jack Mallette carried a torch to Greenwood’s City Hall Wednesday as part of a nine-city tour to draw attention to the State Games of Mississippi.

Mallette, 61, who has family ties to Greenwood, stopped briefly on his run to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the games.

West Point cadets to visit Greenwood on Monday

A group of 12 cadets from the U.S. Military Academy West Point will be in Greenwood on Monday to learn about the struggle for civil rights.

State Sen. David Jordan, D-Greenwood, will lead the cadets on a tour of Delta landmarks.

“They’ve been to the South but never the Delta,” Jordan said.
