Recycling goal: 10% of city households

The recycling coordinator for Greenwood-Leflore Recycling has an ambitious plan — increasing the number of households in Greenwood that have signed up for curbside pickup by 50 percent.

“We’ve had 400 total for a year and a half,” Anne Marie Gregory said. “Six hundred is roughly 10 percent of the 6,000 houses in Greenwood.”

Reserve reunion

Beginning Friday, members of Greenwood’s 173rd U.S. Army Reserve Quartermaster Company will celebrate their 47th reunion.

The gathering will last through Sunday at Greenwood’s Hampton Inn. The unit, which was led by the late John Looney, was the only Army Reserve unit from Mississippi to serve in South Vietnam during the Vietnam War.

Shell-go No. 520, 109 W. Claiborne Ave., was robbed shortly after 9:30 p.m. Monday. A man believed to be in his mid-40s robbed the store of an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing on foot. Police are reviewing security camera footage in an effort to identify the suspect.

Gunman holds up store

The Greenwood Police Department is continuing its investigation of an armed robbery Monday night.

The robbery occurred at the Shell-Go No. 520, 109 W. Claiborne Ave. Police were called at about 9:35 p.m., Chief Ray Moore said.

Legion post commander continues lifetime of service

Nehemiah Wright has seen a lot of combat firsthand.

In Iraq alone, Wright served in Desert Shield, Desert Storm and three other specialized operations that the 51-year-old Greenwood native says he can’t talk about openly. He retired from the Marine Corps after 21 years with the rank of gunnery sergeant.
