County harvest in high gear

Leflore County farmers are making the most of dry weather and abundant sunshine as harvesting moves into full swing.

This year’s cotton harvest is 40 percent complete, according to Andy Braswell Sr., an agent with the Leflore County Extension Service. The harvest is also ahead of last year, he said.

The first donation, for $16,000, goes to help fund Main Street Greenwood.

No arrests yet in pair of shootings

Authorities are continuing investigations into a pair of shootings last week that left one man dead and two others wounded.

No arrests have been made in either case.

“Progress is being made, though it’s nothing that I can talk about,” said Greenwood Police Chief Ray Moore regarding the fatal shooting of Marvin Reedy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
