Double whammy

The Mississippi Blues Trail marker on Money Road — which honors guitarist Robert Johnson — has again become the subject of misfortune.

Greenwood attorney Floyd Melton III discovered the broken marker on Christmas Eve.

Its post was toppled over, and the sign, which weighs close to 90 pounds, broke off its base upon impact.

Timmy Haymore said Tuesday that he had complained Monday afternoon about his treatment at the hands of the officers to Itta Bena Mayor Walter Parker and Police Chief Robert Kirklin.

While Greenwood has weathered the economy of 2011 better than other cities of comparable size, that outcome was based upon a lot of hard work, said Mayor Carolyn McAdams.

“When the economy took the downturn, some cities just didn’t have the income coming in to match their expenses,” she said.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
