The Greenwood City Council said goodbye to a loyal city employee Tuesday at its final meeting of the year.

Anne Marie Gregory, director of the Greenwood-Leflore Recycling Center for the past four years, will be stepping down Jan. 6. She will be attending Delta State University and intends to become a registered dietitian.

Former store to be auctioned

An auction is scheduled Thursday for a piece of Greenwood’s historic downtown.

The former site of Antoon’s Department Store, located at the corner of Carrollton Avenue and Main Street and built in 1908, is up for bid. Any bids will be opened at 2 p.m. at City Hall.

No minimum bid is required.

Delivering holiday cheer: Adopt-A-Family helps more than 200 families

More than 200 families came out Friday to Greenwood’s National Guard Armory to collect toys, bikes and clothing as part of the Adopt-A-Family program.

Adopt-A-Family is sponsored by the Salvation Army and The Greenwood Commonwealth.

This year, all 229 families were adopted.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
