MLK march continues tradition

The Greenwood Voters League will hold its 44th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. March Sunday.

The national holiday commemorating King’s birthday has been going on for 28 years, but the march has been an ongoing event that brings people of all races together, said David Jordan, president of the Greenwood Voters League.

Council must vote on raise

Plans for an across-the-board pay raise for Greenwood municipal employees must be formally approved by the City Council, Mayor Carolyn McAdams said this morning.

The mayor said she hoped to have a special call meeting of the council on Monday to approve the 3 percent pay raise.

Waking up to snow

After a week of rain, Greenwood got its first significant snowfall in two years this morning.

Greenwood-Leflore Airport reported half an inch of snow had fallen by 6:40 a.m., said Joanne Culin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jackson.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
