A Greenwood police car caught fire outside police headquarters shortly before 4 a.m. today. The vehicle sustained heavy fire damage to its engine compartment and interior. A second vehicle, a Mercury sedan, owned by Tawana Friend of Itta Bena, which was parked near the police car, was also damaged. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The police car is the second city-owned vehicle to catch fire in less than a month. On July 29, a Department of Public Works backhoe caught fire on West Park Avenue. On Tuesday, the Greenwood City Council voted to advertise for bids on a new backhoe.
